Three dead after cars and truck collide in Central Hawke’s Bay

Three people were killed after a car and a truck collided on State Highway 2, near Takapau.
Emergency services were called to the crash between Snee Rd and Byrne Rd at 2.48pm on Tuesday.
A police spokeswoman said Central Hawke’s Bay Road was blocked after a collision with two vehicles.
A St John’s Ambulance spokeswoman said three ambulances and a helicopter took part in the scene.
Police said the diversions are in place at intersections SH2 of State Highway 50, Charlotte Rd and Kopua Rd.
“A detour is in place, however we urge drivers to avoid the area and delay the journey for the next two hours,” a police spokesman said.
The three killed motorcyclists were traveling in the car while the truck driver was airlifted to Hawke Bay Hospital.
The road will remain closed for the next few hours.
According to a Transport Agency Waka Kotahi NZ – Spokesperson for Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne, the southbound lane SH2 is closed with on-site diversions near Charlotte Rd.
“Northbound remains open,” the spokesman said. “Please be extra careful when crossing and expect delays in the area.
“Contractors are on the way,” the spokeswoman added.
The accident followed two heavy SH2 collisions in the region on Monday, just before noon.
A collision at 6.16am involving a light truck was the first of two accidents that closed parts of SH2.
A man in his 30s and a male teenager were taken to hospital from the crash site near Te Kahu Rd. The couple had serious to moderate injuries but were later reported to be in a stable condition.
The highway was closed for just over an hour, before a lane opened between 7.35am and 11am.
Police were also called into a two-vehicle collision near the Omahu Rd and SH2 roundabouts at 10.15am.
A person had to be released from one of the vehicles by the Fire and Emergency crew.
A man in his 20s was taken to Hawke’s Bay Hospital, where he was in stable condition.
Both early accidents were in good weather conditions, with dry roads and good visibility.
