Iran sentences British-Iranian researcher to 9 years in prison
Iran has sentenced a British-Iranian anthropologist to nine years in prison and fined him over $ 700,000.
TEHRAN, Iran – Iran sentenced a British-Iranian anthropologist who studied child marriage and female genital mutilation to nine years in prison and fined her more than $ 700,000 in cash, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Sunday.
The report said Kameel Ahmady was convicted by the Revolutionary Court of Iran on charges of collaborating with European embassies in support of promoting homosexuality, visiting Israel as a BBC reporter, collaborating and communicating with foreign and hostile media, and infiltrating law enforcement and sending false reports about the country to the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran.
The report said Ahmady has the right to appeal within 20 days.
In October 2019, Iran acknowledged the arrest of Ahmady for suspected links to foreign intelligence-related institutes.
His wife Shafagh Rahmani and activists had announced that he was arrested in August of the same year. At the time, the New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran said Ahmady had previously been the target of a tough line in the Iranian media for his work on politically sensitive topics, including child marriage, LGBTQ issues and mutilation of the female genitals.
He was released on bail in November 2019. Sunday’s report did not say whether he was still free.
Travel to Israel and homosexuality are both illegal in Iran. Offenders can face up to five years in prison for visiting Israel. Homosexuals can face the death penalty if they have sex, although there have been no reports of the death penalty for homosexuality in recent years.
Ahmady is one of several dual nationals arrested by Iran in recent years. Iran does not recognize dual citizenship.
Iran holds another British-Iranian national, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who has already served most of her five-year sentence on espionage charges. She was granted temporary release this spring and allowed to stay indefinitely at her parents’ home in Tehran due to the coronavirus virus pandemic.
Zaghari-Ratcliffe, an employee of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the news agency’s charity arm, was tried on charges of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government.
Their cases come amid rising tensions between Iran and the West over its nuclear program.
President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from the nuclear deal last year and imposed sanctions, hurting Iran’s economy. Iran has recently begun pulling out of the deal, warning it would take further steps if Europe could not guarantee Tehran the ability to sell its crude oil on the global market.
