Leon County COVID-19 cases increased by 130%.Florida cases surge 42%

A surge in new coronavirus cases in Florida during the week ending Sunday increased by 42% with 15,684 reported cases. Last week, there were 11,048 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Florida ranks fifth among the states with the fastest per capita spread of the coronavirus, according to a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. Last week, cases of coronavirus in the United States increased 10.4% from the previous week, with 92,148 cases reported. With 6.45% of the country’s population, Florida had 17.02% of the country’s case last week. Twenty-eight states across the country had more cases last week than last week.

In many places, no cases and deaths were reported around July 4, so these cases shift to the next week, resulting in inaccurate weekly comparisons.

Leon County reported 161 cases last week. A week ago, 70 cases were reported. Throughout the pandemic, 33,402 cases and 332 deaths have been reported.

Local health ministry spokeswoman Pam Saulsby admitted that local health officials were “certainly” aware of the rise. On Friday, the local health department tweeted that the positive rate for the past week was 6.83%.

“This increase is partly related to the outbreak of summer camps affecting young children and teens,” the agency said on Twitter. “We encourage qualified people to be vaccinated. We are stepping up our contact tracing efforts to contain the virus and prevent further spread to the population.”

In a weekly status report on Thursday, the ministry said, “COVID-19-related hospitalizations have remained low, with new virus deaths in Leon County within the last two weeks, despite high positive rates. Not confirmed yet .. “

Meanwhile, Gadsden County reported 21 cases last week. Seven cases were reported a week ago. Throughout the pandemic, 5,854 cases and 99 deaths have been reported.

Wakulla County reported 20 cases last week. A week ago, 10 cases were reported. Through the pandemic, 3,593 cases and 56 deaths have been reported.

Jefferson County reported two cases last week. A week ago, one case was reported. Throughout the pandemic, 1,532 cases and 28 deaths have been reported.

Franklin County reported two cases last week. Nine cases were reported a week ago. Throughout the pandemic, 1,375 cases and 20 deaths have been reported.

Within Florida, the worst weekly outbreaks per capita occurred in the Baker, Nassau, and Hardy counties. Overall, the newest case was added in Miami-Dade County, with 2,930 cases. Broward County, 1,470 cases. Duval County has 1,403 people. Weekly cases increased in 56 counties from the previous week. The worst increase from last week’s pace was in the Miami-Dade, Duval and Orange counties.

Florida ranks 21st in the state, with at least one vaccination, with 54.2% of its population vaccinated at least partially. The national percentage is 54.9%, as shown by USA TODAY analysis of CDC data. The most used Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in the United States should be given twice every few weeks.

In the week ending Sunday, Florida reported an additional 537,139 vaccinations, including 225,470 initial doses. Last week, the state received 285,031 vaccinations, including 132,493 initial doses. In total, Florida reported that it administered a total dose of 21,299,517.

Throughout Florida, cases decreased in nine counties, with the highest in Suwannee, Okeechobee, and Charlotte counties.

In Florida, 213 people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending Sunday. The week before that, 217 people were reported dead.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 2,381,148 people have been coronavirus-positive and 37,985 have died from the disease in Florida, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. In the United States, 33,717,567 people are positive and 605,526 are dead.
