Alaska has returned to higher state-wide alert levels as the number of COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations has increased. The vaccination rate will stall.

“This pandemic is clearly not over and is primarily caused by unvaccinated people,” said Alaska epidemiologist Dr. Joe McLaughlin.

The latest increase in cases has begun Around early July, And soared last week, McLaughlin said. It’s in some communities like Juneau Encourage people to mask indoors again, Whether you are vaccinated.

I also see states all over the country Increased in cases of new coronavirus, After the infectious disease plummeted earlier this year.

Alaska aggregated 882 new infections last week, according to state data — 140% increase from last week.. According to McLaughlin, the majority of new cases involve unvaccinated people.

He said there are two major factors driving the recent wave of infections. The rise of highly contagious delta mutants, which account for most of the new cases in Alaska. Also, more Alaskans are meeting people in person again.

“Therefore, the more people gather, the more infections will occur, especially if this delta variant is in circulation,” McLaughlin said.

Relation: The delta variant was not detected in Alaska until a few weeks ago. Now it is 40% of the sample.

Fortunately, fully vaccinated Alaskans are largely protected from the coronavirus and even the delta mutant, McLaughlin said. But the problem is that Alaska’s vaccinations are slowing down. Only 52% of residents over the age of 12 are fully vaccinated.

“The proportion of the population currently vaccinated is much lower than it was a few months ago,” said McLaughlin. “And we really need to see that change.”

In addition to the recent increase in the number of cases, hospitals in Alaska have also reported an increase in patients with severe viral symptoms.

According to state data, 59 people were hospitalized for coronavirus in Alaska on Saturday, up from 37 a week ago.

At Anchorage’s Alaska Native Medical Center, the increase in coronavirus cases began in early July, said Dr. Holly Alfrey, Chief Medical Officer.

“It’s possible that there were two inpatients with the coronavirus about two weeks ago, and this morning we were up to 14 years old,” she said.

Alfrey said all patients admitted to the hospital with coronavirus symptoms were not vaccinated.

“As a doctor, I think the reason people get sick and are hospitalized is because they haven’t been vaccinated,” she said. “At our hospitals and at all hospitals in Anchorage, and in fact hospitals across the country, I think it’s growing us significantly.”

At a nearby Alaska Regional Hospital, infection prevention coordinator Jenny Mayo said the number of patients with COVID-19 has also increased steadily over the past two weeks.

“The majority of these patients are either unvaccinated or not completely vaccinated,” she said. “The total number of hospitalizations has not yet reached previous wave levels, but there are concerns about an increase in the number of COVID-19.”

Most patients are younger than previous spikes and are under the age of 65, Mayo said.

In hospitals, there are some patients who test positive for coronavirus despite being completely vaccinated, but “these patients are likely to have mild or moderate symptoms. “She said.

Relation: Experts say that the rare breakthrough case of COVID in Alaska is far less worrisome than the stagnation of vaccination rates.

Mayo, Alfrey and McLaughlin urged Alaska to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Immunization rates vary widely from region to region, and McLaughlin said he was worried that areas with low immunization rates could become hotspots.

“I think we’ll continue to see an increase in this new delta variant,” he said. “Communities with low vaccination rates are likely to be hit harder by this rise and will be more likely to have more outbreaks.”
