Aggressive raccoon exposes three people to rabies in Cullman County
The Alabama Public Health Service has warned Alabama residents to take care of wildlife after a raccoon in Cullman County tests positive for rabies.
According to ADPH, the raccoon attacked a person on the promenade near the Fox Hollow Road parcel of Kalman. Animals also showed signs of neurological illness before being suppressed, detained, and collected for rabies testing, which returned positive.
A study by the Cullman County Health Department found that three people could have been exposed and were treated for post-exposure rabies to prevent infection.

Rabies is a virus that is transmitted by saliva. In general, exposure to rabies usually requires direct contact with infected saliva through a bite or scratch. Other less common contact exposures to the mucous membranes through the eyes, nose and mouth are also considered serious.

Alabama law requires dogs, cats, and ferrets older than 12 weeks to be vaccinated against rabies. Rabies vaccine is also available for horses and other livestock, as recommended by a veterinarian.
