According to the CDC, the onset of influenza has been accelerated this year, especially among children and young adults.

Public health officials have warned for weeks that the flu could get worse this year as people get tired of masking and increasing social distance and are encouraged by the COVID-19 vaccine. Very few people who have not been vaccinated against the flu last year may have a weaker immune system than usual.

Late autumn and winter situations can be complex and confusing as two powerful respiratory viruses with very similar symptoms spread at the same time. Both can be infected at the same time, and both can spread without symptoms. Both viruses can surge, some of which are labeled as twin epidemics, and can put additional strain on medical and testing providers.

Influenza outbreaks have already been reported on some university campuses. This is not a good sign for parents and grandparents when students go home for Thanksgiving.

Rowan University has had about 180 cases since November 1, but it is currently on the decline. However, Stockton University has not seen an unusual increase in cases. According to university spokesman Diane Damiko, commuting school Stockton does not have complete data as many students may seek care off campus.
