UW Health experts warn about the “eccentric” potential this winter
Madison, Wisconsin – UW Health experts warn of a potential “cold” with an increasing number of COVID-19 and flu cases.
According to Dr. Jim Conway, UW Health’s Medical Director, cases of influenza are already on the rise in Wisconsin, putting additional strain on state hospitals.
“Last year, the incidence of influenza was almost zero,” Conway said in a statement Tuesday. “But this year is not the case because the restrictions have been relaxed.”
As the number of cases of COVID-19 continues to increase, the number of cases of influenza is increasing. As of December 19, the average 7-day COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin was 3,294.
Last season’s flu record was only 100 in Wisconsin, but Dr. Conway said returning to “normal” levels would be disastrous.
“When we see hospitalizations for influenza rising near pre-pandemic levels, alongside this rapidly growing variant of Omicron, hospitals will not be able to handle it,” Conway said. Told. “We are already struggling.”
During the 2019-2020 season, more than 4,400 people were hospitalized for influenza.
Dr. Conway said the best way to prevent influenza and COVID-19 is to vaccinate.
“People hospitalized for influenza or COVID-19 are rarely vaccinated,” Conway said. “The best gift you can give this holiday season is vaccination.”
Conway also recommended staying home in case of illness, washing hands, wearing a mask, and getting a COVID-19 booster.
