Human-mouse hybrid hailed by top scientists as the most human yet
A human-mouse hybrid has been hailed as the most human chimera yet, according to scientists.
Researchers who created the hybrid embryo containing both human and mouse cells found that the human cells “learned” from their mouse neighbours, and developed much more quickly than they normally would.
The hybrid embryo – called a chimera by scientists – contains around 4% human cells.
They claim that represents the largest proportion of human cells ever combined in a chimera.
Humans develop in the womb much more slowly than mice, but the effect of being combined with the embryonic mouse cells accelerated the human cells’ development, they added.
Jian Feng, a professor in the department of physiology and biophysics at the State University of New York at Buffalo who was a senior author on the research paper, told LiveScience the rapid development of the human tissue was “very serendipitous,” adding “we did not really foresee that.”

Explaining why the human cells took on the pace of the host mouse body, Feng said that the embryos were able to generate human red blood cells in 17 days, as opposed to more like 56 days that process might take in a normal human embryo.
Similarly rapid development was observed in cells that might one day have become an eye. Basically, says Feng, “the human cells assumed the clock of the mouse embryo.”
Chimera research can be very controversial. Scientists create these bizarre hybrid embryos in order to study deep questions about disease and ageing.
In the future, human hearts, lungs and other major organs could be grown in larger animals – for example pigs – in order to provide donor organs perfectly tailored to the recipient’s DNA.
Usually, chimeric embryos are deliberately terminated before they reach maturity but in 1984, scientists in Cambridge created a sheep-goat hybrid that survived into adulthood.
More recently, Chinese scientists successfully created two monkey-pig chimeras, although they only survived for a few weeks after being born.
