Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture warns about bird flu
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (WHTM) —The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has found a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the country.
The state has not identified cases of the disease, but Pennsylvania’s Secretary of Agriculture Russell Reading is calling on poultry-owning residents to be vigilant and review biosecurity practices.
“We haven’t seen HPAI in Pennsylvania yet, but we need to continue our efforts to actively protect the state from the threat of this harmful virus,” says Reading. “The Ministry’s Department of Animal Health Diagnostic Services is at the forefront of controlling and eradicating diseases of livestock and poultry. Preventing emerging infectious diseases is important to prevent financial loss for farmers and the federal government.”
HPAI is a highly contagious disease that can make wild birds and livestock very ill and deadly.
As of Thursday, February 17, Indiana and Kentucky reported that a commercially affected herd in Virginia reported a herd of affected mixed birds in the backyard.
- This department cautions residents of all species of birds to take these precautions to prevent the spread of HPAI.
Keep Distance: Restrict access to your property or poultry or post biosecurity signs. - Keep clean: Wear clean clothes, rub boots / shoes with disinfectant, and wash your hands thoroughly.
- Do not take the illness home: If you, your employees or family members are on another farm, or elsewhere with livestock or poultry, clean your car’s tires and equipment before returning home. Please disinfect.
- Do not borrow illness from your neighbors: Do not share equipment, tools, or other supplies with your neighbors of other livestock or poultry owners.
- Know the warning signs of infectious bird disease: Know which diseases are of concern to your flock and be aware of signs of abnormal behavior, severe illness, and / or sudden death.Early detection is important to prevent the spread of the disease
- Report a sick bird: don’t wait. Report serious or abnormal animal health problems to your veterinarian, regional dissemination agency, or state or federal animal health authorities.
Owners should also be aware of the signs and symptoms of HPAI in the herd.

The CDC states that these cases of bird flu do not show imminent public health concerns. At this time, there are no human cases of this disease.
