Cornwall smokers urged them to break their habits for a non-smoking day
“Don’t give up!” This is a message to an estimated 60,000 smokers in Cornwall on National No Tobacco Day today (Wednesday, March 9).
Smoking remains the leading cause of premature death in the United Kingdom, with approximately 75,000 preventable deaths annually.
Worryingly, a recent national survey of 2,000 current smokers found that nearly half (45%) smoked more since the first blockade began.
As life begins to return to some sort of normal state, people are urged to take another shot by permanently counteracting their habits or helping their family, friends, or colleagues quit.
Cllr Dr Andy Virr, an adult and public health portfolio holder and emergency department consultant at Royal Cornwall Hospital, said:
“Almost every day, we see the devastation that smoking has on people’s lives and the lives of their families and loved ones.
“Stopping smoking is always beneficial to your health and is never too late to quit. The chances of a particular end attempt being successful increase as someone tries more, so available support Would you like to try it today using? “
Ruth Goldstein, Deputy Director of Public Health at the Cornwall Council, said:
“Stopping is less stressful than afraid and can have a huge positive impact on your life. There is plenty of support available, and throwing away cigarettes not only allows you to be more active and live longer, but also saves your fortune. You can also save.
