Colorado mortality is 25% above pre-pandemic levels as COVID, drug overdose contributes to increased mortality.
The number of deaths in Colorado increased again in 2021 beyond what was already there. Unusually high level Overdose of COVID-19 and drugs significantly increased mortality in the previous year.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment recorded 48,193 deaths in 2021, according to preliminary data provided by the agency. That’s about 1,300 more than in 2020 and 9,600 more than the average for the three years just before the pandemic, or about 25% more than normal levels.
The state’s population continues to grow (meaning that additional deaths are expected), but it does not fully explain the magnitude of the growth.
Despite the high expectations of some people, the situation did not actually return to normal in 2021, said Lisa Miller, vice director of public health practice at the Colorado Public Health School. The healthcare system is stressed by coping with multiple COVID-19 surges and labor shortages, some people are unable to receive prompt care, and families remain financially and emotionally difficult. She said she was facing.
“I wasn’t surprised at all,” she said. “We were still suffering from a pandemic.”
Cancer, heart disease, and COVID-19 were the top three causes of death in 2021, as in 2020.
Deaths from cancer and heart disease remained above pre-pandemic levels, but appeared to be slightly lower than the highs set in 2020. However, the data are still tentative, and these declines may diminish or disappear when the state’s 2021 figures are finalized this summer.
However, deaths from COVID-19 increased. Despite the widespread use of vaccines in the second half of 2021.. The State Department of Health reported 5,199 deaths from 4,303 who died in 2020 after the pandemic began in March, citing the virus as the main cause.
Last year included the second half of the wave that began in the fall of 2020 (the most deadly wave ever in Colorado) and the surge caused by the Delta variant in the fall of 2021. Most of the deaths caused by the Omicron wave occurred in January of this year.
Another major factor in the increase in mortality was drug overdose. According to state preliminary data, 1,757 people died as such. This is about 700 more than the year before the pandemic. Deaths from overdose had already increased before 2020, but the pandemic turmoil exacerbated the problem, Miller said.
State Health data do not classify the types of drugs involved in overdose, but Colorado has increased fatal fentanyl overdose. In the first nine months of 2021, it increased by more than 42% from the whole of 2020.
Suicide deaths have increased since they declined in 2020, and have continued to increase each year for most years, at least since 2015. The state reported that 1,322 people committed suicide, an increase of 71 from the pre-pandemic average for three years.
With the exception of chronic respiratory illness and pneumonia, almost all causes of death were above the pre-pandemic average of 2021. It’s not entirely clear why the flu season was so mild, but actions such as wearing masks and limiting face-to-face interactions probably played a role, Miller said.
Alzheimer’s disease also appeared to be below pre-pandemic levels, but the decline was small enough that it could disappear when the final data for this summer are released.
It is not clear whether deaths will return to more normal levels in 2022, Miller said. Already vulnerable people have been disproportionately hit since the beginning of the pandemic, and those in good health and resource-rich are relatively protected, she said.
“Obviously, this didn’t have the same impact on all parts of our society,” she said.
