China reports the first case of H3N8 bird flu in a 4-year-old boy
China reported the first known human case of the H3N8 strain of avian influenza after a 4-year-old boy living in central Henan was tested positive for this strain. The boy was hospitalized earlier this month with fever and other symptoms. According to national health authorities, the risk of widespread transmission among people is low.
H3N8 is reportedly known to have been circulating since 2002 after its first appearance in North American waterfowl. The virus is known to infect horses, dogs and seals, but has not been detected in humans so far. On Tuesday, the Chinese National Health Commission said in a statement that the boy’s family raised chickens at home and lived in areas where wild ducks lived.
According to the committee, the boy was directly infected with birds and the strain was not found to have “the ability to effectively infect humans.” Health agencies also said that a test of the boy’s close human contact found “no anomalies.” In addition, NHC said the juvenile case was “one-time cross-species transmission with a low risk of large-scale transmission.”
Meanwhile, the Commission also warned the public to stay away from dead and sick birds and seek immediate treatment for fever and respiratory symptoms.
