Estrogen treatment reduces the risk of COVID-19 mortality

Women received one or more HRT or COCP prescriptions within 6 months prior to COVID-19 infection.
Using a mixed-effects logistic regression model, researchers quantified the association between HRT or COCP use and mortality from all causes of women with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 infection. Confirmed cases were defined by a positive RT-PCR test via a nasal or pharyngeal swab, and suspicious cases were diagnosed radiologically or clinically (based on recommendations from the UK Public Health Service).
The average age of the cohort was 59.0 years and the self-reported ethnic group was 64.8% Caucasian. Of the 1863478 women who participated in the study, 5451 were infected with COVID-19. The use of HRT was associated with a 22% reduction in mortality from all causes of COVID-19. Deaths from all causes of women prescribed COCP have not been reported, hindering the assessment of the effects of contraception on reducing the risk of death for COVID-19.
The risk of death from all causes was higher with COVID-19 in older women, underweight, large families, hypertension, or women taking immunosuppressive drugs. However, women with asthma and HRT, in particular, had a significantly lower risk of death (58% risk reduction).
“We hope this study provides patients and clinicians with the peace of mind that there are no signs of discontinuing hormone replacement therapy due to a pandemic,” said study author Christopher R. Wilcox. ..
Researchers recommended further research on the association between combined oral contraceptives and COVID-19 mortality in larger cohorts. They have proposed more studies to support their hypothesis that estrogen may protect against severe or deadly COVID-19.
