Abdominal fat in older women is associated with a 39% higher risk of dementia within 15 years, the study says
Above-average abdominal fat may increase risk of dementia by 39% within 15 years in late adult women A study published Tuesday in the International Journal of Epidemiology compared people with normal waist circumference.
Studies show that men and women over the age of 50 have a 28% dementia risk when considering BMI and waist circumference.
Researchers measured height, weight, and waist circumference of participants, and followed them up after an average of 11 years to see if they were diagnosed with dementia.
“Based on previous research, as the size of the abdomen grows, so does the memory center of the brain.” Dr Richard Isaacson, who heads Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian Hospital, said.
“This new study is important because it supports these findings and increases the risk of dementia, especially by increasing the size of women’s hips,” said Isaacson, who was not involved in the study.
The findings could help elucidate the causal link between dementia and obesity, the researchers said.
“Dementia is one of the major health problems in the 21st century and can threaten the aging of the population,” said Andrew Steptoe, co-author and professor of psychology and epidemiology at University College London. States.
“Our findings suggest that increasing obesity rates exacerbate the problem.”
Obesity and dementia are linked
BMI results were a standard ratio of height to weight. Researchers have established the patient’s dementia status through such means as doctor diagnosis and hospital records.
To isolate the link between obesity and dementia, researchers controlled potential confounding variables such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, and the status of the APOEε4 gene carrier, a known genetic risk factor for dementia ..
People with dementia averaged 71.8 years at baseline assessment. The average age when participating in the study of people without dementia was 61.9 years.
Based on previous studies, UCL researchers pointed out some explanations for the link between obesity and dementia. One reason may be that dementia is directly related to hormones derived from adipocytes. Alternatively, body fat may be involved in amyloid proteins known to be associated with dementia or metabolic and vascular pathways associated with the accumulation of brain lesions.
“We need to monitor both BMI and waist circumference to avoid metabolic disorders,” said the senior author. Dr. Drina Kadder, Senior Researcher, UCL Epidemiology and Health Institute.
To avoid dementia, pay attention to waist size
“From a practical and clinical perspective, anyone who wants long-term protection of their brain health should pay attention to their hip size,” said Isaacson of Weill Cornell.
He warned that a simple body-mass index score that combines height-to-weight ratios does not provide a complete picture of weight and obesity. Measurements such as muscle mass and waist circumference can tell a more nuanced story.
“Based on the new data from these studies, we can now identify gender differences in dementia risk,” said Isaacson. “Combining these findings with my clinical experience has shown a greater impact on visceral fat on female memory function, probably mediated by metabolic pathways.”
Isaacson’s group said personalized lifestyle behaviors could help stop cognitive decline. From 50 possible recommendations, each participant was given 21 actions to try to use as a barrier against dementia.
The results showed that nutrition and physical activity related interventions were by far the two most important items in their list.
This week’s new UCL insights are another point on the map that will help you plan a global struggle against dementia and prevent the emergence of as many future cases as possible.
“By identifying factors that may pose a risk of dementia affected by lifestyle factors, we hope that public health interventions do not necessarily identify a significant proportion of cases of dementia. “, said Steptoe.
