Monkeypox is a rare disease. It comes from the same family of viruses that cause smallpox, and the World Health Organization declared it eradicated worldwide in 1980.
The virus spreads through long-term intimate contact, but is less contagious in typical social situations. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, malaise, swollen lymph nodes, and lesions.
Quebec recorded the first case of monkeypox in the country last month and reported the first suspected infection in Montreal on May 12.
The state is taking a smallpox vaccine Imvamune, But it is reserved for close contact with a high risk of developing the disease. According to Boileau, more than 3,000 doses have been given since late May.
Since the majority of cases were detected among men who had sexual relations with other men, Drouin explained that the vaccine would be offered within the community as a precautionary measure.
She said that sex workers and men who are visiting Montreal and plan to have sex with other men during their visit are among those who are vaccinated.
