Monkeypox symptoms, recovery by men in the Bay Area
(KRON) —In the Bay Area, a man suspected of having monkeypox has fully recovered from his illness after a successful treatment that requires acceptance of a large amount of bureaucratic formalism.
More than three weeks after believing that 33-year-old Kevin Kwon was infected with monkeypox, he still has few symptoms.
“I’m a little scared, but I hope it recovers,” said Kwon, a resident of Alameda County.
Kevin’s mental state and body are in much better condition compared to the early stages of his illness, where lesions and rashes have eaten him up. He suspected monkeypox after visiting New York City’s Pride at the end of June.
But initially, Kwon was seeking medical care when he returned to the Bay Area. Before he was referred to Dr. Peter Chin Hong of UCSF, his doctor diagnosed him with scabies and eczema.
“Kevin’s case was probably one of the most severe cases I’ve ever seen,” Chin Hong said.
Through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s thorough and compassionate use system, Chin Hong has been approved to prescribe the antiviral drug TPOXX to Kwon.
He is one of seven patients treated with UCSF. Not all doctors are willing to prescribe, so Kwon is fortunate to have taken the medicine.
“I had six tablets a day (morning and night) for two weeks, so I’m completely away from it,” Kwon said.
Although Kwon has never been officially diagnosed with monkeypox, Chin Hong states that all visual signs indicate positive cases. He and Kwon agree that the test needs to be improved.
Chin-Hong hopes that the World Health Organization (WHO), which declares monkeypox a global emergency, will help provide rapid access to vaccines and treatments for critically ill patients.

“We may also receive an emergency use authorization, which will make it easier for clinicians to treat it nationwide,” said Chin Hong.
“We have the opportunity to start this collaborative effort to stop it before it becomes this long-term sexually transmitted disease,” Kwon said.
