West Nile virus found in Macomb County
West Nile virus was first detected in Macomb County this summer, the Macomb County Health Department said Thursday.
Residents are encouraged to take precautions to avoid being bitten.
Michigan has no known human cases of the virus, but West Nile virus was detected in two mosquito samples collected in Macomb County.
“This finding by our monitoring team is important because it lets us know that this season’s mosquitoes are now carrying the virus, which can spread to humans,” Macomb County Health said. Department Director/Health Officer Andrew Cox said in a statement. “We encourage everyone to take steps to avoid mosquito bites whenever possible.”
The department has provided a list of tips for residents to stay safe.
- Use repellents containing DEET or picaridin on clothing and exposed skin. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends using lemon eucalyptus oil as a more natural repellent. The manufacturer’s instructions must be strictly followed when using these products.
- Mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn. Residents are required to limit outdoor activity, wear trousers and long sleeves, and use repellent during this time.
- People who work or enjoy spending time outdoors are also at increased risk of contracting West Nile virus through mosquito bites.
- Buckets, flowerpots, barrels, children’s pools, and other areas of standing water should be emptied when not in use to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs. Change the water in pet dishes and bird baths regularly to keep gutters from pooling.
- Window and door screens should be well repaired to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home or building.

West Nile is a human disease transmitted by mosquito bites. Infection occurs when a mosquito bites an infected bird.
