First U.S. monkeypox death confirmed in California

The first death in the United States this year from monkeypox infection was confirmed in California, in an individual described by health officials as “severely immunocompromised.”

The Los Angeles Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Monday that a resident of Los Angeles County has died from a monkeypox infection.

“Public Health sends our deepest condolences and wishes of comfort to the families and friends who have lost loved ones,” the city’s health department said. “The resident had been hospitalized with severe immunodeficiency.”

No further information about individuals, such as age, gender or ethnicity, was shared by the department, citing the need to protect “confidentiality and privacy.”

This is the first confirmed death from monkeypox. A Texas man, also said to be severely immunocompromised, died last month After being diagnosed with monkeypox, the role the infection played in his death is still under investigation.

Nearly 22,000 monkeypox cases have been confirmed in the United States. So far, the US state with the most confirmed cases is California, with 4,300 cases.

Monkeypox infections are rarely fatal and most cases recover within 2 to 4 weeks. According to the World Health Organization, the disease has a fatality rate of about 3-6%. However, as with many viral infections, such as COVID-19, immunocompromised people are more likely to become seriously ill if infected.

Symptoms of monkeypox infection include flu-like signs such as fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, soon followed by a painful skin rash associated with the virus. Contact with fluid from the characteristic rash is the main way the virus spreads.

There is no specific drug to treat monkeypox, but smallpox vaccines and treatments such as Jynneos and TPOXX are being deployed to prevent infection and potentially serious illness. Although monkeypox and smallpox belong to the same virus family and clinical data are limited, previous studies have shown that smallpox treatment is also effective against monkeypox.
