covid: Elderly Covid survivors likely to develop Alzheimer’s within a year, says new study

Covid injuries are leaving behind an irreparable scar. One of the harshest side effects of the deadly virus has been lingering mental health issues and cognitive impairment.

Now, a new study found that elderly people – who have survived Covid – may be at a greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, as early as one year. Alzheimer’s is a neurological disorder that shrinks the brain (atrophy) resulting in memory loss and confusion.

Published in the
Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, the researchers found that senior citizens aged 65 and above, who contracted Covid, were more likely to get their Alzheimer’s diagnosis within a year of their infection. The risk was the highest in women who were aged 85.

The study showed that the Alzheimer’s risk almost doubled in older people (from 0.35 per cent to 0.68 per cent) in one year since the infection.

The co-author of the study, Pamela Davis, who is a Distinguished University Professor and The Arline H and Curtis F Garvin Research Professor at the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine, shared that prior viral infection and inflammation must be considered to understand the risks for developing the disease.

“Since infection with SARS-CoV2 has been associated with central nervous system abnormalities including inflammation, we wanted to test whether, even in the short term, COVID could lead to increased diagnoses,” Davis said.

Earlier in March, a World Health Organization (WHO) report said that the pandemic has triggered a 25 per cent jump in mental health-related issues like anxiety and depression across the world.

Listing out the problems, the WHO said social isolation, loneliness, fear of infection, the feeling of suffering, death of a loved one, exhaustion, suicidal thoughts, grief after bereavement and financial worries, among other things, were cited as major stressors leading to anxiety and depression. Women and young people were the worst hit.

Coming back to the study, Davis’s team analysed data from 6.2 million adults who were at age of 65 and above and received treatment between February 2020 and May 2021 in the US. These people had no prior diagnosis of the disease.

For the study, the population was divided into two groups – more than 400,000 people were listed under Covid contractions and 5.8 million people were enrolled in the non-infected group who did not document any cases of the infection.

The researchers believe the study can monitor the impact of the challenging disease and help understand the burden of future disability.
