Merck, Moderna Details Potential Skin Cancer Vaccine Advancement
Moderna shares soared on Tuesday after the COVID-19 vaccine maker detailed advances in developing a vaccine for a deadly form of skin cancer.
The company said a potential melanoma vaccine it is researching with pharmaceutical giant Merck has worked well in a small study of patients whose cancer had been surgically removed.
The drug company said the combination of the vaccine and Merck’s immunotherapy Keytruda statistically significantly improved survival before cancer recurrence in patients with advanced melanoma.

The group of patients who received the potential vaccine and Keytruda had a 44% reduction in the risk of death or cancer recurrence, the companies said.
Treatment was continued for about a year in both groups unless disease recurred or side effects became severe.
Merck and Moderna plan to begin a Phase 3 trial next year, and the companies say they intend to expand their approach to other tumor types.
Merck and Moderna will enter into a cooperation agreement in 2016, and the two companies will share the costs and benefits of the cooperation. Merck also paid Moderna his $250 million.
Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Moderna shares surged 23% in intraday trading to above $200.Merck, based in Kenilworth, NJ & Co. was up less than 1%.
