Coffee company donates to Alzheimer’s research

Savannah, GA (WTOC) – For Charles Sykes, it’s more than just coffee.
“I know it’s something that everyone enjoys. Every morning she started the day with a cup of black coffee, so it was just a way to remember her.”
A memory in every bite.
“My mother was the glue for my whole family.”
But five years ago, Charles and his family received news that would end their world.
“My mother was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2018.”
And as they soon find out, the battle to defeat it will not be easy.
“There are no real treatments available. There were some medications we tried, but they weren’t effective in helping her.
The disease slowly robs them of their mother and her memories.
“It felt like we had a lot of goodbyes. Every time we saw her, it felt like we were saying goodbye to her.”
As Charles and his family mourned the death of his mother, he turned his attention to finding ways to prevent this from happening to anyone else.
“I could have made a one-time donation and that would have been great, but this is how I will continue to donate.”
What Charles did is start a business called the Lasting Memories Coffee Company.
“I thought it would be of broad interest.”
Inspired by his mother’s love of coffee, he helped fight the disease that took her away, donating 10% of all sales to Alzheimer’s research.
“My hope is that other families who have Alzheimer’s in their family will have some resources, some treatment. I thought I would eventually find some kind of drug that would help me find a cure.”
It can’t bring his mom back, but it keeps her alive in a way — that each cup has a little caffeine, a lot of hope, and a lasting memory that one day we’ll all have. I am full of beliefs.
“I think she’s proud. I think she’s proud that I’m supporting Alzheimer’s research and trying to make a difference.”
