Nevada caregivers provide 141 million hours of unpaid work
LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A new report from the Alzheimer’s Association shows that Alzheimer’s disease is on the rise as caregivers’ workloads increase in Nevada.
of report Nevada says there are 84,000 caregivers. Caregiver roles include physically caring for a loved one, assisting with bathing and dressing, overseeing health care, and everything in between. This is a 24/7 responsibility that many caregivers take in addition to their daily duties.
By 2022, caregivers will provide 141 million hours of unpaid care, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. That work is worth her over $2.6 billion.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Nevada has over 15,000 health and personal care aids. As the number of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease grows, an expert says that number will need to increase by 50% by 2030 to meet demand.
Kat Hartley has been a caregiver for six years, caring for her mother and adult siblings with special needs. She also works with the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. She said that while there are resources for caregivers, it is a difficult system to navigate and can be overwhelming.
“We have been able to help more social workers and people navigate. Managing everything is part of the caregiver’s journey and feels like a full-time job,” Hartley added.
According to the annual report, Nevada had 43 geriatricians in 2021. To meet demand by 2050, this will need to increase by more than 260%.
Nevada had 49,000 people aged 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease. That number is projected to jump to 64,000 by 2025.
Between 2000 and 2019, deaths from Alzheimer’s disease also increased by 247%.
