Over half of cardiac scans in Covid-19 patients show damage
More than half of the heart scans in hospitalized Covid-19 patients are abnormal, suggesting that the virus can have devastating effects on this vital organ, according to a new study.
According to a study in 69 countries funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), 55% of the 1,261 patients surveyed had abnormal changes in the pumping function of the heart, with about 1 in 7 being severe Shows evidence of dysfunction.
The vast majority (901 patients) have never been diagnosed with heart problems, and scientists conclude that Covid-19 itself can have serious cardiac effects.
Within this group, cardiac scans were abnormal in 46% of patients and 13% had severe disease.
More than half (54%) of all scans were on intensive care and the other scans were on general ward, heart ward, lung ward, and A&E.
Dr. Sonya Bavnarayan, Dean of Medicine and Consultant Cardiologist at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Severe Covid-19 diseases can damage the heart and circulatory system.
“We need to understand more about why this is happening so that we can provide appropriate care in the short and long term.
“This global study, conducted during the height of the pandemic, shows that attention must be paid to the cardiac complications of people at Covid-19 in order to tailor treatment as needed.”
This study, published in the European Heart Journal – Cardiovascular Imaging, found that abnormalities were approximately evenly divided between the left and right ventricles of the heart.
According to the scan, about 3% of patients had a recent heart attack.
As a result of the scan, one-third of the patients changed their treatment, including the administration of heart failure medications and more careful management of fluids and treatments designed to support heart function.
This research was conducted by researchers at the British Heart Foundation Center for Excellence in Research at the University of Edinburgh.
The team warned that the study could not conclude what common heart changes in people who did not undergo a scan would look like.
They emphasized that all patients in the study were hospitalized and suspected of cardiac complications.
Professor Mark Dweck, who led the research, said: “Covid-19 is a complex, multisystem disorder that can seriously affect many parts of the body, including the heart.
“Many doctors were reluctant to order an echocardiogram for a patient with Covid-19, as it was an additional procedure that involved close contact with the patient.
