Asking Pediatric Infectious Disease Specialists to Participate in the National Vaccine Conference
Dr. Rupesh Chawla, a pediatric infectious disease specialist, said: University of Saskatchewansaid a meeting will be held in Ottawa next week to discuss what new vaccines may become available in the next few years.
This is part of the National Immunization Awareness Week, which starts Monday.
“I expect a variety of vaccine topics will be discussed in Ottawa during the Canadian Immunization Conference,” Chawla said.
The conference will be held April 25-27.
He said topics such as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), what is happening with COVID-19, and what is happening with antimicrobial vaccines for pneumococcal pneumonia will be discussed.
He said influenza and RSV are detrimental to Saskatchewan’s health care system.
“For us in Saskatchewan, probably the biggest two were RSV and the flu, overwhelming the system. COVID-19 was certainly part of it. We have definitely seen an increase.”
He said those numbers were much higher than the previous year.
Chawla expects the debate over how to approach COVID-19 will be a highly debated topic at the conference in the years to come, with some experts suggesting that “everyone gets vaccinated.” ‘, while other experts point out that they are debating whether to shift the focus.
