State veterinarian explains how to protect yourself from tick-borne disease
Baltimore – Spring is here and warm temperatures are on the way.

May is tick-borne disease awareness month.
David Crumb, a public health veterinarian in Maryland, told WJZ that the risk of infection increases as temperatures rise.
“They’ve been dormant all winter and aren’t feeding now,” Crum said. “They’re actually warm enough to get out there. exposure do occur, but do environmental factors drive their activity?”
Ticks are commonly found outdoors on foliage, weeds, tall grass, shrubs and woodlands.
There are a few things you can do to protect yourself while enjoying nature.
“Consider wearing light clothing. You want to be able to spot ticks,” Crumb said. It prevents ticks from getting in. Also, consider wearing permethrin-treated clothing, which actually helps repel ticks, an EPA-approved repellent.
Other tips include showering after being outside, putting clothes directly in a hot dryer, and performing a tick check.

Lyme disease is the most prevalent tick-borne disease in Maryland.
Crumb said don’t forget to protect your pets.
“Talk to your veterinarian about how to prevent your pet from being exposed to ticks, as they are a pathway for ticks to enter your home,” Crumb said. and protect yourself.”
Tick-borne diseases are highly responsive to treatment and can be cured if detected early.
