MACOMB (WGEM) – Local doctors say they are excited about a new respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the world’s first vaccine to combat respiratory syncytial virus, which can cause severe respiratory infections.
The vaccine, called Arexvy, is manufactured by a British pharmaceutical company known as GSK.
Dr. Edwin Card, chief medical officer at McDonough District Hospital, said most respiratory syncytial virus infections are mild, but severe infections are more likely to occur in young people and the elderly.
“There are 60,000 to 160,000 people over the age of 65 who get RSV every year, and 6,000 to 10,000 of those people may actually die from RSV,” Card said. said.
He said the vaccine is specifically aimed at older people.
“It’s actually about those of us over the age of 65, people with severe lung diseases like COPD and asthma, people with heart disease like congestive heart failure, people with compromised immune systems. It’s meant to protect people with ailments,” Dr. Card said.
He said a lot of effort goes into researching and producing these vaccines, so the vaccines are safe and help prevent serious illnesses.
“We started using them in the 1700s with cowpox to prevent smallpox. It’s been shown,” Dr. Card said. “They don’t cause autism. They don’t compromise the immune system. These are just one of the great advances in medicine.”
The vaccine must be formally approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) before it is released to the public. The approval meeting is scheduled to be held this summer.
