A year later, bird flu cases are down, but they’re still affecting birds in Minnesota

Minneapolis — A year ago, poultry farms in the state were dealing with an outbreak of bird flu. Bird flu hit more than 100 farms in Minnesota, forcing the euthanasia of 3.5 million birds.

Our state has the highest number of wild birds affected. However, the same strain of bird flu still exists, but the number of infected people has decreased significantly.

At the University of Minnesota Raptor Center, traces of last year’s epidemic, which killed hundreds of bald eagles and black owls across the country, are still visible. Shoe covers and disinfecting mats are everywhere.

But while the Raptor Center remains on high alert, the number of cases is low.

“A year ago at this time, we had a flood of virus-positive birds flying in,” said Dr. Dana Franzen-Klein.

Only a handful have happened so far this year. And it’s spring migration time, so it’s going to be a worrying time.

According to one theory, migratory birds traveling to and from Minnesota have been accumulating antibodies since last year.

“The virus hasn’t gone away. It’s been circulating in Minnesota all winter, just at much lower levels,” said Frantzen Klein.

That’s good news for turkey farmers, too.

“It’s interesting that Minnesota hasn’t been hit, especially the commercial industry,” said Abby Shuft of the University of Minnesota Extension.

Two flocks in a backyard in southern Minnesota recently reported cases of bird flu, but that’s all for now. From a consumer perspective, the price of eggs, which surged during the winter, has fallen by $1.50 since January. But farmers know the threat hasn’t gone away.

“There are still risks for producers of all sizes, and they still need to take biosecurity very seriously,” said Shuft.

North and South Dakota are still reporting cases of bird flu. As for bird feeders, Minnesota experts say songbirds aren’t usually affected by the flu, so it’s safe to set up feeders this spring.
