Workshop aims to reduce fall risk in older people
Charlotte, North Carolina — According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, millions of people The number of people over the age of 65 is declining year by year.
Additionally, the CDC reports that 1 in 5 falls result in a serious injury.
Gaston County workshops teach prevention efforts to the most prone to falls.
“Balance Matters: Fall Prevention Workshop” is sponsored by several organizations, including the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and the Centralina Regional Aging Authority.
Over eight weeks, people learn skills and physical movements that fully reduce their risk of falling, while also helping improve strength, flexibility and balance.
Linda Minzis is a family and consumer science agent for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
Mingueth said fall prevention events help older people live quality and fulfilling lives.
“We don’t just show you exercise, we also talk about life-building skills like how to get help, how to communicate with your doctor, how to assert yourself,” Minguez says. “We are all getting older. Fall prevention is one of the key components of maintaining an independent life for older adults. One fall can be life-changing. It can take your power away completely.When you ask people what they are looking for, [the response is] You will be able to take care of yourself and live independently. ”
Sandy Mason lives near Mount Holly.
She is credited with helping set up and run workshops and other activities for seniors in the area.

Mason says it’s important to hold community workshops like ‘The Problem of Balance’
“We take people outside. They need to go out and be with other people,” Mason said. “The balance situation for everyone is serious and we are working on it.
Gwen Young, 71, was one of the workshop participants. She knows what it’s like to go through her fall.
“I have fallen many times,” Young said. “I had both knee replacements and hip surgery. It’s always a challenge when you have restrictions and you don’t want to hold back the crowd and you still want to go.
Young says this event has allowed him to live life to the fullest without fear of falling.
“It took me out of a situation that might have been terrifying and brought me down to another level so I could think about what I could do to make that situation better for me,” Young said.
Young says the workshop has given her the confidence to go anywhere without fear of falling.
“If you’re afraid to go out, what quality of life can you have if you don’t go out and do things with friends or do things by yourself,” says Young. “The number of days we are given on this earth is limited, and we don’t want to spend it at home.”
Minguez said the “Balance Matters” workshops run year-round in the state and are free for attendees.
Organizers encourage young people in their 40s to take classes.
