Saginaw Detects First Mosquito-Borne Virus of 2023

Saginaw, Michigan Corporation (WNEM) – First mosquito-borne virus detected in Saginaw County this year by the Saginaw County Mosquito Control Commission (SCMAC).
According to SCMAC, Jamestown Canyon Virus (JCV) was discovered in a spring mosquito sample collected on May 31.
The commission said the threat of virus transmission in the county was low, but residents could take the following precautions:
- Avoid going outdoors during the hours when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn.
- Wear shoes and socks, light-colored long pants, and long-sleeved shirts outdoors.
- Apply a repellent containing DEET or other EPA-approved product according to label directions. Consult your doctor before using repellents on infants.
- Make sure your doors and windows have screens that fit tightly. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows closed, especially at night.
- Eliminate all standing water sources around your yard that can encourage mosquito breeding, such as buckets of water, wading pools, old tires, and other objects that can collect water. Contact SCMAC if there is standing water in roadside ditches, flooded yards, fields, or similar areas that may harbor mosquitoes.
Most JCV infections do not cause symptoms. However, when symptoms appear, a flu-like illness with fever may develop suddenly. Severe cases can develop neurological symptoms such as meningitis or encephalitis and require hospitalization, but SCMAC says such cases are rare.
