100 men are expected to be diagnosed with testicular cancer each year in B.C.
April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, and B.C. researchers are urging people to be proactive
April is Testicular Cancer Awareness Month, so it's time to grab your testicles and check for any abnormalities.
“This is a cancer of young men,” says BC cancer researcher Dr. Lucia Nappi.
Unlike other cancerous tumors, testicular cancer affects men between the ages of 15 and 45 and becomes less common as men get older, Nappi said.
“Aging is not a risk factor. It is a protective factor.”
Nappi said testicular cancer is less common than prostate cancer or breast cancer. However, it is likely to cause 100 new cases in British Columbia each year and is the most common cancer among young men.
Regular checks are essential, and monthly checks are a great way to understand what is and isn't standard. Nappy said that over time you will be able to notice if something changes.
Nappi said if a lump or abnormality is found, the boy and man should contact their local health care provider to request an ultrasound.
Approximately 80% of all cases of testicular cancer are treated at stage 1, where the tumor is usually isolated to one testicle and removed. Nappi said removing the testicles does not affect a person's sexual ability or ability to bear children.
Testicular cancer begins before the baby is born, and there is evidence that several events occur during fetal life that help testicular cancer grow.
“So there are changes in the DNA of these tumor cells that cause cancer to develop at a very early stage.”
If you find a lump, talking to a trusted friend, partner, or relative is also an option, but there may be cultural constraints, Nappi says.
“Some patients, for cultural reasons, don't talk to anyone…These patients ultimately die from testicular cancer.”
