More than one in eight new mothers (13.4%) told researchers they experienced some form of abuse by a health care worker during childbirth in 2020, according to the report. The most common complaints were of being ignored, requests for help denied, or not responded to in a timely manner.
4.1% of respondents said they had been “yelled at or scolded” by healthcare workers. A smaller proportion, 2.3%, said their clinician had threatened to withhold treatment or coerced them into accepting treatment they did not want.
The data was collected from 4,598 new mothers across six states: Kansas, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Virginia, plus New York City.
Researchers found that the highest rates of abuse were among women who: She has Medicaid insurance. Identifies as LGBTQ. Obesity; people with a history of substance or mood disorders, and people who have had an unplanned cesarean section.
They also found that rates of abuse varied widely by race and ethnicity. New mothers who were Southwest Asian, Middle Eastern, or North African had the highest rates of reported abuse (33.7%), followed by multiracial mothers (16.9%). black mothers (15.9%); white mothers (13.3%); American Indian or Alaska Native mothers (12.5%) Asian mothers (11.5%). Study authors say limitations include findings that may not be generalizable to the entire United States, and all variables were self-reported.
