“Allergy season” is getting more serious.Why and what can you do?
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Health experts say allergy season is getting more intense, with an estimated one in four adults in the U.S. suffering from seasonal allergies.
“Not only are allergy seasons getting longer, but the amount of pollen is also increasing during that season,” said Dr. Andrew Rowley of Nebraska Medicine.
Historically, allergy season lasted from March to October, Lowry said. Currently, it starts in February and lasts until autumn. “Patients don't seem to feel very safe anymore,” Rowley said.
Lowry believes part of this change is due to climate change.
“Some of that is due to increased carbon dioxide, and some of it is due to warmer weather. Certainly, some of this pollen is probably becoming a little more allergenic because of pollution and rising ozone levels.” “We have the data,” he says.
Lowry said the Midwest has been hit hard.
“We have a lot of tree pollen and grass pollen, so we get hit by all of that,” he said.
Lowry says an easy way to relieve symptoms is to keep the windows in your home and car closed to prevent external problems from becoming internal problems. Oral and nasal antihistamines and sinus rinses can help. For those with special needs, a new FDA-approved home treatment is available.
“If a patient is allergic primarily to grass pollen, primarily weeds, and dust mites, there are oral immunotherapy options that those patients can do at home,” Lowry said.
Doctors say people with allergies may be better off staying indoors in the mornings and on windy days, when pollen levels are highest.
