Avian flu spreads to other livestock but is rare in humans
Avian flu is spreading again in Iowa and across the nation. This time, birds aren't the only ones at risk. On Wednesday, KCCI learned that a herd of dairy cows in O'Brien County was infected with the disease. After speaking with experts, they said there are many measures in place to prevent the virus from spreading from animals to humans. Avian flu is most commonly transmitted from bird to bird and other animals, including dairy cows. The virus can also infect humans, but the World Health Organization says the risk is low. Most people infected with avian flu experience symptoms such as conjunctivitis. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says humans can get the virus by consuming infected animal products, such as milk. But a professor at Iowa State University is adamant that milk purchased at the grocery store is safe to drink. “The virus is killed by the pasteurization process, so milk is safe to drink on any grocery store shelf,” said Philip Jardon, a veterinarian at Iowa State University. Jardon said cows diagnosed with avian flu should be isolated from the herd.He recommends other biosecurity measures, such as limiting contact between people and birds, and adds that there is little treatment for dairy cows infected with avian flu. The spread of avian flu among Iowa dairy cows and people in other countries is cause for concern, but there's no need to panic.
