Bay Area hospitals see surge in coronavirus cases, but fewer severe cases
COVID-19 cases on the rise
COVID-19 cases across the country have been rising over the past 30 days, with two new variants driving the summer surge: Hillsborough County has reported a 33% increase in cases, Pinellas County a 59% increase and Polk County a 64% increase.

“Patients are complaining of body aches, headaches, fatigue, all the usual symptoms of COVID that we've seen over the last few years, but the numbers are increasing,” emergency department nurse Nathan Craft said.
Kraft said he sees multiple patients a day, but their hospital stays are much shorter.
“By and large, people are being discharged from hospital, sheltering in place at home and suffering from symptoms, but we're seeing very few complications,” he said.

Honorary professor USF Health professor Dr. Thomas Unash said while case numbers may be rising, deaths nationwide are falling.
“What's happening now is pretty much what I predicted for 2021, 2022, where the huge waves that we've been through are now ripples that are settling down,” he explained.
Dr Unnasch said this current series of cases was caused by two new variants, FLRT, which he called “grandchildren” of the omicron variant.

“What we're doing here is looking at a really fascinating story of viral evolution in real time,” he said.
This variant causes similar symptoms to what we've seen for years, but fewer people are losing their sense of taste and smell.
“We're seeing a decrease in really severe symptoms and, interestingly, a slight increase in gastrointestinal symptoms – upset stomach, vomiting and diarrhea,” he said.

Both Dr. Unash and Dr. Kraft believe COVID-19 will soon become just another common cold.
“We're not seeing as many seriously ill patients, which is a good thing,” Unash said.
