USDA aims to prevent spread of raccoon rabies in New York State
U.S. Department of Agriculture air crews will soon be flying over western New York in an effort to stop the spread of rabies in raccoons.
Though it is not as deadly as it once was, the potentially deadly virus is still present in counties across the state, including Chautauqua County.
“We get calls every summer and fall and even spring, so we work closely with local businesses. Wild animals are not livestock, so don't go near them,” said Lacey Wilson, the center's public health director. Chautauqua County.

“By targeting these wild animals at the source, we can prevent rabies in those populations and ultimately reduce the risk of infection to humans and pets,” said Jordana Kirby, rabies field coordinator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Service.
More than 4 million baits will be dropped from Maine to Alabama in an effort to eradicate the virus.
“We're preventing any further spread of raccoon rabies in the area and preventing further spread,” Kirby said.
Chautauqua County health leaders are grateful for the collaboration and are calling for a more layered approach to lowering bail, with clinicians knowing how to treat rabies and the community knowing how to prevent it.
“There's really no silver bullet when it comes to these issues and this virus,” Wilson said.
From Chautauqua, where work is scheduled to begin on Aug. 14, crews will head to Erie and Niagara counties starting Aug. 18, weather permitting.
