Early coronavirus vaccine trial begins in Singapore

SINGAPORE-Early phase clinical trials of the Covid-19 vaccine will begin in Singapore and the first vaccinations this week will be given to volunteers.

Clinicians and researchers are screening those who have advanced to ensure that they are fit for trials expected to last until October.

The SingHealth Investigational Medicine Unit is testing vaccines.

The vaccine, called Lunar-Cov19, was developed by the Duke-NUS Medical School and the US pharmaceutical company Arcturus Therapeutics.

Associate Professor Jenny Law, deputy director of clinical and science for the SingHealth unit, told The Straits Times that more than 250 volunteers have made progress toward the trial.

About 100 people will participate in the trial. Volunteers are in their 20s and 50s.

“This trial is open to volunteers between the ages of 21 and 80, so we continue to look for more participants, especially those in the senior group,” she added.

Professor Law said the volunteers’ reaction to the vaccine trial was encouraging.

“It shows that people are willing to contribute to the advancement of science, even if the trial does not directly benefit them.

Vaccines work by “demonstrating” the immune system, an important part of the virus, and by “training” in recognizing and remembering pathogens without exposing the patient to the risk of disease.

In traditional vaccines, the immune system recognizes invaders and calls on their “soldiers” (antibodies and T cells) to kill them.

However, the Lunar-Cov19 vaccine contains a new type of biotechnology.

The vaccine contains only a fragment of the genetic material of the virus, not the whole virus.

When these viral gene fragments enter human cells after injection, the genomic fragments direct the cells to begin producing the characteristic spike proteins of coronavirus.

It trains to recognize an important part of the virus, the spike protein, without exposing the whole body to the whole virus.

Professor Low says that the vaccine has promising preclinical results and that the next step is to ensure that it is safe, eliciting robust antibodies and T cell immunity in vaccinated individuals, Covid -19.

The Lunar-Cov19 early clinical trials conducted here are known in the medical community as Phase I/II trials.

Phase I vaccine trials usually involve a small number of subjects, usually less than 100.
