China promotes needle-free insulin injections in diabetics-health

China has spread needle-free insulin injections in the treatment of diabetes, reducing the side effects and pain of patients.

Recently, a needleless insulin injection operation guideline compiled by the Diabetes Committee of the Chinese Nursing Association was published in Beijing. Studies have shown that needle-free insulin injections require lesser doses than traditional insulin injections.

“The unique subcutaneous properties created by needle-free insulin injections helped patients stabilize their postprandial blood glucose levels,” said Ji Linong, a professor at Peking University People’s Hospital.

Insulin is one of the safest clinical treatments for diabetes and is currently injected by needle. According to existing treatment protocols, type 2 diabetic patients require at least 2 doses daily and type 1 patients require at least 4 doses.

Needles often cause discomfort and distress the patient for treatment. Prolonged use of needles tends to induce subcutaneous adipogenesis (adipogenesis), reduce insulin absorption efficiency and lead to loss of blood glucose control.

The new needleless injection method is performed by instantaneous high-pressure compression of the liquid in a very thin state onto the skin with device pores less than 0.14 mm in diameter. The liquid penetrates the epidermis and dermis and reaches the subcutaneous tissue with an optimal absorption depth.

Hundreds of hospitals nationwide use needle-free insulin injections. As with traditional insulin injections, the needle-free device can be operated by patients themselves at home, the researchers said. In addition, the lifespan of the 4,380 yuan (about US$629) device is up to 6 years.
