What is Body Roundness Index (BRI)? Is it an alternative to BMI? | In Focus Podcast
What is a quick indicator of health? Most people would answer Body Mass Index (BMI). However, experts are increasingly coming to the conclusion that BMI has some limitations. Why? Firstly, BMI was created using data from 19th century Europeans, so it doesn’t work well across different populations. Also, BMI doesn’t tell us the composition of our weight, especially where it’s concentrated. Indians are genetically predisposed to gain fat in their abdomen, which increases the risk of various diseases, including diabetes. This is where another indicator, the Body Roundness Index (BRI), comes in. Conceived in 2013, studies over the past decade have shown that BRI may be a better predictor of health risks. Unlike BMI, BRI takes into account waist circumference, so it basically tells you if your body is too round and unhealthy.
