Over-the-counter mouthwashes may affect the new coronavirus and may help reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection, a new study reveals.
From a virologist Ruhr University, Germany conducted cell culture experiments and demonstrated that the SARS-CoV-2 virus can be inactivated with the help of a commercial mouthwash formulation.
High viral load was detected in the throat and oral cavity of some COVID-19 patients. Thus, mouthwashes that are effective against the novel coronavirus may help reduce viral load and even reduce the risk of disease transmission.

Virologists have tested eight commercial mouth rinse products with various ingredients available in German drug stores. They mixed each mouthwash with viral particles and interfering substances that replicate the effects of saliva in the mouth.
The mixture was then shaken for 30 seconds to simulate the effect of gargling, and then virus titers were determined using Vero E6 cells, which receive the novel coronavirus.
The researchers also treated the virus suspension with cell culture instead of mouthwash and then added it to the cell culture.
All of the tested mouthwash formulations tested reduced initial virus titer, three of which showed that all virus was cleared within 30 seconds.
Researchers believe that further research can confirm this effect in clinical practice and find out how long the effect lasts.
