“If I hadn't had my mammogram, I might not be here today.”

A woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer despite having no symptoms is encouraging others to get regular mammograms.

Judith Loveridge, 61, said she was “shocked” when she learned she had the disease, and said early detection had helped her clear the all-clear.

At Derby and Burton University Hospital (UHDB) in South Derbyshire and South East Staffordshire, it was found that around 30% of eligible women were not attending hospital. Breast cancer screening schedule.

UHDB Breast Care Lead Nurse Jackie Conway says attending is “very important” to catch problems as early as possible.

“When you can't feel a lump or feel any symptoms, this is the earliest stage that breast cancer can be detected,” Conway said.

“For some people, it's perfectly fine; for others, it's uncomfortable. Very few people really feel pain. It's just uncomfortable.”

Loveridge was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), an early form of breast cancer, in 2021.

As part of her treatment, she had a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, and underwent chemotherapy.

“I had this cancer in two places in my breasts and I had to have a mastectomy, which was quite a shock to the system,” she said.

“If I hadn't gone to that appointment, I really might not be here right now.

“Maybe if I had waited until I could feel or see something, the cancer would have progressed further and I wouldn't be here.

“If you go in for a routine mammogram when you don't have any symptoms, you can't expect to hear anything other than 'everything is fine.'

“The test takes five to 10 minutes, and those five to 10 minutes could save your life.”

According to Cancer Research UK, breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, accounting for 15% of all new cancer cases between 2017 and 2019.

Around 55,500 women and 370 men are diagnosed in the UK each year.

One in seven women in the UK will develop breast cancer during their lifetime, and it is more common in older women.
