One case of BSE confirmed in cattle at Dumfries and Galloway farm
One case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad cow disease, has been confirmed on a farm in Dumfries and Galloway.
The Scottish Government said movement restrictions were in place at the scene, including any other animals that had come into contact with the cow.
Further investigation into the cause of the disease continues.
Chief Veterinary Officer Sheila Voas said this involved an atypical strain of BSE, which is not contagious, and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) said there was no risk to human health.
There are two types of BSE: classic and atypical.
While classical infections can infect humans who eat the meat, scientists believe atypical infections occur naturally and are not contagious to humans.
The Dumfries and Galloway incident was identified as a result of routine BSE monitoring.
The Scottish Government said atypical BSE is not known to pose a risk to public health and the animal does not enter the human food chain.
Owners of affected animals are working with authorities on next steps.
Agriculture Minister Jim Fairley said the government and other agencies had taken “swift and strong action to protect the agricultural sector”.
“The fact that we were able to identify this isolated case so quickly is evidence that our surveillance systems are working effectively to detect this type of disease,” he said.
“I would like to thank the animal owners for their hard work.
“Their decisive action enabled us to quickly identify and isolate the incident, minimizing the impact on the industry as a whole.”
Voas said the rapid detection of the incident was proof that the surveillance system was doing its job.
“We are working closely with the Department of Animal and Plant Health and other partners to determine the source of this disease,” she said.
FSS deputy chief executive Ian McWatt said strict controls were in place to protect consumers from the risk of BSE and those “key safeguards” remained in place. Ta.
There have been several cases of BSE in the UK over the past decade, including one in Ayrshire earlier this year.
Surveillance has been carried out since the 1980s crisis, when 180,000 cattle were infected and 4.4 million were slaughtered to eradicate the disease.
