Bird flu kills 20 big cats at Shelton Sanctuary, devastating conservation efforts
Washington State — Twenty big cats at a Shelton wildlife sanctuary have died from bird flu.
It happened within days around Thanksgiving, and the nonprofit is now preparing to clean it up in hopes of reopening it to the public next year. The Wild Cat Advocacy Center announced that as of December, more than half of big cats were infected with bird flu.
“This has been a huge nightmare. We never thought something like this would happen to us,” Mark Matthews, director and co-founder of the Wild Felid Advocacy Center, told KOMO News. . “Maybe it's just a facility where the cats were in close proximity to each other, but our facility is spread out over five acres.”
The tragedy has had a deep impact on staff at the sanctuary, who are grieving the loss of 20 animals who were part of a global wildcat conservation effort. Includes tigers, cougars, lynx, bobcats, and other big cats.
“Tabi, she was my favorite tiger,” Matthews added. “Before Thanksgiving, we had 37 cats.Today we have 17 cats. [including] Four people are recovering. ”

Wild bird-borne viral infections can be spread through respiratory secretions and bird-to-bird contact, and can affect birds and other mammals that feed on bird faeces.

The nonprofit is now taking extensive measures, including preparing to disinfect everything before entering the sanctuary, including washing boots and wearing personal protective equipment.
The remaining animals are quarantined at the sanctuary to protect them. Matthews said he expects it will take several months to get approval from the Department of Agriculture to reopen to tour groups.
