Virus detected in mosquitoes, warning of Japanese encephalitis in northern Victoria
Victoria's health department is urging residents in the state's north to remain vigilant against mosquitoes following the recent detection of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV).
JEV is a rare virus that can cause serious infections of the brain.
The Department of Health says two mosquito traps in Moira Shire have been found to contain the virus, marking the first time the disease has been detected in mosquitoes in Victoria this season.
The same thing follows Recent detections in New South Wales Last month, the first human case of the virus in Victoria was a man from Katunga.
The man remains in a critical condition in a Melbourne hospital.
Victoria's deputy chief health officer Christian McGrath said evidence of JEV was increasing across the state's north this season.
“Japanese encephalitis activity has not increased significantly since it was first identified in Victoria during the 2021-22 season,” he said.
“It does exist. It is transmitted by mosquitoes, so it poses a risk to people.”
Mr McGrath said confirmed cases of JEV last month and some detections in the environment showed the virus was circulating.
He said the more it rains, the more mosquito numbers could increase, thus increasing the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes that carry nasty diseases.
McGrath said most JEV patients are asymptomatic and may only have a low-grade fever and headache.
But for less than 1 percent of people, it can cause a nasty brain infection, he said.
“It can have very serious consequences for affected individuals.”
The department said people visiting northern Victoria, particularly inland river areas and areas near the Murray River, were potentially at high risk of infection.
People in the area are urged to take steps to prevent mosquito bites, including covering themselves, using repellents, and limiting time spent outdoors during high mosquito times. Masu.
The JEV vaccine will be provided free of charge to eligible people in 24 high-risk local government areas in northern Victoria.
This includes people who regularly spend time outdoors, people who are homeless, people living with inadequate protection from mosquitoes, and people working in flood recovery.
