Doctors warn against avian influenza virus spreading to cows
Birmingham, Alabama (WBRC) – Inspectors discovered a different new type of avian flu From the version that has been spreading to American herds since last year.
Experts say this means that the form of the virus has spilled from wild birds to cows at least twice, raising new questions about the wider spread and containment of the virus.
Dr. David Hicks, a Jefferson County Department of Health Health Health Officer, said he has not seen any incidents involving cattle here in Alabama, but he said we should be cautious.
Dr. Hicks emphasizes that no one should drink raw or unpasteurized milk. He adds that milk sold in stores has already been pasteurized and is safe to consume. He pays particular attention to people who work closely with cows and buy milk directly from farmers.
“If you're a farmer, you're working in those industries and cattle, like you're at higher risk. From an occupational perspective, maintain proper hygiene practices, ensure cleanliness and regularly take care of them. It is important to wash and avoid unnecessary exposure. As a consumer, we always recommend drinking pasteurized milk. At this point, against consuming raw, immature milk I'll give you advice,” explained Dr. Hicks.
Since last year, avian influenza has been detected in 16 states, including birds here in Alabama. A state veterinarian said a poultry farm in Kalman County might receive “all clarification” soon after euthanizing 100,000 chickens for avian flu.
