New AI tools to predict brain decline ahead of time can revolutionize dementia treatment
Early treatment options have been developed with new game-changing artificial intelligence (AI) tools that can predict patient brain decline several years ago. Researchers at Mass General Brigham came up with an AI tool that uses EEG to analyze and predict subtle changes in brain activity during sleep.
Research published in Journal of Alzheimer's Diseasehighlights that the AI tool was trained using sleep research data from a group of women aged 65 and over, which were followed for five years. Of the 281 participants who had normal cognitive function at the time of the first sleep study, 96 developed cognitive impairment by the time they arrived at the second round of assessment five years later.
After extracting EEG patterns from EEG data, researchers used AI to detect subtle changes in EEG activity, particularly at gamma band frequencies during deep sleep.
The AI tool accurately flagged 85% of individuals who ultimately experienced cognitive decline, with an overall accuracy of 77%.
“This could completely change the way we approach dementia prevention,” said Dr. Shahab Haghayegh, the lead author of the study.
“New and sophisticated analyses, advanced information theory tools, and AI can be used to detect subtle changes in brain wave patterns during sleep.

Early detection system
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 55 million people live with dementia worldwide. Several studies have suggested that behavioral and physiological function changes may occur prior to the onset of cognitive impairment. Identifying these signals in the precursor stage may provide a better window for effective intervention.
An early detection system in AI tools can give people at risk valuable time to guide radical lifestyle changes, such as exercise, staying mentally active, or eating a balanced diet. These changes may help maintain cognitive health before the disorder is set.
However, the researchers added that larger studies involving more diverse populations are needed to examine and expand these findings of diverse populations.
