Machine learning models analyze both host characteristics and viral genetics to identify potential animal reservoirs and regions where an outbreak may occur. The focus is on ortopoxviruses, including those that cause natural PO and MPO.

“Nearly three-quarters of emerging viruses that infect humans come from animals,” said Stephanie Seyfert, an assistant professor at WSU. “If we can better predict which species pose the greatest risk, we can take proactive steps to prevent the pandemic.”
The study, published in Communications Biology, highlights that the model has identified Southeast Asia, Equatorial Africa, and the Amazon as potential hotspots in the outbreak of ortopocs viruses. These regions have high potential host concentrations and low natural po vaccination rates.
Katie Tsen, a graduate student in veterinary medicine and the first author of the study, noted that the model offers greater prediction accuracy than previous models and can be adapted to other viruses. “We were using a model specifically for ortopoxviruses, but we could go in many different directions and tweak this model for other viruses,” she said.
Pilar Fernandez, a disease ecologist at WSU, explained that the previous model focused on animal ecological properties, but missed the genetic makeup of the virus. “Our model improves the accuracy of host predictions and gives a clearer understanding of how the virus spreads across species,” Fernandez said.
AI tools simplify the task of identifying potential viral reservoirs and make it easier to target wildlife surveillance efforts. This advancement is important to prevent future pandemics by predicting the spread of the virus more accurately.
The study included contributions by WSU's Heather Kohler and scientists at the University of Oklahoma, London and Yale University as part of the National Science Foundation-funded Institute for Virus Emergency.
