A Joliet West student diagnosed with tuberculosis weeks after the Waukegan incident
Joliet, sick. – School officials say the second case of tuberculosis has been confirmed at a high school outside Chicago, involving students at Joliet West High School.
What we know:
Officials at Joliet Township High School notified families that a Joliet West student has been diagnosed with tuberculosis.
The school is working with Sunny Hill TB Clinic to identify and notify students and staff who may have had close contact with affected students. Anyone who has not been contacted directly by the school is not at risk of exposure.
Students are currently undergoing treatment and are advised to stay home until it is no longer contagious.
This case comes just a few weeks later when another case of tuberculosis Confirmed at Waukegan High School Late March. In both cases, local health officials emphasized that tuberculosis is not spreading readily and usually requires extended exposures in a near quarter.
Symptoms of active tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats, and weight loss.
Things we don't know:
Authorities have not said how many individuals in Joliet West may have been exposed, or how long did students have been infected while attending school.
At Waukegan High School, authorities have not revealed how many people were affected or whether the affected person is a student or staff.

Health officials encourage people identified as close contacts to consult with health care providers for testing.
