As of August 19, more than 320 Facebook posts (here) Features two images and long captions related to the 1918 Spanish Cold Pandemic. What was called the “Spanish flu (1918) was not “influenza”-a result of the introduction of electricity. When the body is exposed to new forms of radiation, it causes illnesses that can cause “flu-like” symptoms. This article covers some of the claims made in the text.
In many areas affected by the Spanish influenza pandemic, electricity was introduced years before the pandemic. For example, some New York City homes were electrically powered as early as the 1880s, according to the Energy Institute.here).
It is estimated that approximately one-third of the world’s population was infected with the H1N1 virus, the so-called Spanish cold, between 1918 and 1920, and at least 50 million people worldwide were estimated to have died from the disease (here ).
There is no link between the Spanish influenza pandemic and the increased use of electricity as a source of electricity. Electricity can remove electrons from atoms and molecules without generating ionizing radiation (here). Electrical equipment can be a source of non-ionizing radiation, but there is no conclusive evidence linking this type of radiation to poor health (here).
The post on social media also states: “Only the horrifying vaccinated people died during this scam. How can the vaccine help radiation poisoning? Those who have not been vaccinated have recovered from their symptoms This is the same situation we are facing today.”
No vaccine was developed in response to the Spanish cold pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated on its website: Isolation, quarantine, good personal hygiene, use of disinfectants, restrictions on public meetings, etc. were applied unevenly.”here).
The social post also states, “No virus exists.” Users argue that the only way everyone can get sick is through addiction. [sic], Emotional or spiritual. ”
This is also wrong. Viruses are submicroscopic substances that can only survive in the body of the host (here). Viruses, or virus-like elements, are present in all living things (here). Several viruses have been identified that can affect human health. The World Health Organization (WHO) lists many viruses that can reach epidemic or pandemic rates. These include the new coronavirus, Zika virus, meningitis, Ebola, SARS (here).
The photos featured in the post show an army wearing a mask on the streets of Seattle, Washington before being deployed to France during World War I. Image features of the National Archives and Records Administration 2018 blog (here).
The headlines of the newspapers featured in this article are those of the San Francisco Chronicle, a recent New York Times article (here), the Anti-Mask Conference held in January 1919.
There are other secondary claims in the social media text that are outside the scope of this fact check.
verdict
No. The Spanish influenza pandemic was not associated with the introduction of electricity. The claim that no vaccine was provided during the outbreak that began in 1918 and that the virus is absent is false.
