A child attacked by a rabies raccoon in Arlington
Arlington, Massachusetts — A raccoon that attacked a child in Arlington earlier this week tested positive for rabies, town officials said. The attack took place on Wednesday, October 14, in the backyard of Fountain Road’s house.
Children under the age of five suffered bites and scratches before their mother ousted the raccoon, according to a statement by Arlington Police Chief Julie Flaherty and Health and Welfare Director Christine Bongiorno.
The child is taken to Massachusetts General Hospital and is expected to be okay.
Police searched the area and found a lethargic raccoon on nearby Buena Vista Road at around 5:40 pm. It was believed that this animal was the same animal that attacked and euthanized the child.
The Arlington Animal Care Agency has taken raccoons to a state laboratory for rabies testing. The Department of Health and Human Services was notified on Friday that the raccoon was tested positive for rabies.
“We currently believe that the community is not at risk, but we wanted to inform the public about the incident, so they can be vigilant about the protection of their loved ones and pets,” Flaherty said in a statement.
