What you need to know about COVID-19-related illnesses in children
The symptoms of 12-year-old Madilin Dayton began with headaches and body aches.
After a few days, she couldn’t walk or eat, and a rash appeared all over her body.
Then she got stuck at all.
“I remember my mom taking me to the hospital … and I woke up in the ICU the next morning,” she said.
Madillin’s mother, Marilyn Dayton, rushed Madillin from a small town in Wyoming to the Primary Children’s Hospital.
Doctors then determined that Madilin was suffering from pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome, or a serious coronavirus-related illness known as MIS-C.
According to doctors, MIS-C usually affects older children and appears about 4 weeks after the onset of COVID-19. Symptoms include fever, stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash.
But the real danger lies in how it affects the organs, especially the heart.
At the Primary Children’s Hospital, Marilyn said she was shocked to learn that Madilin had the COVID-19 antibody.
“I thought I was taking precautions. I thought I was doing my best to protect my family,” Marilyn said. “That was a big deal for me as a mother.”
Madyrin finally spent four days in the ICU and two days in the hospital. I’m at home now, but I can’t participate in sports while my mind is healed. Doctors are also uncertain about the long-term effects of MIS-C.
Marilyn and Madilin are currently talking about Madilin’s experience in the hope of helping people understand the risks and dangers of MIS-C. On Monday, they joined a doctor at the Primary Children’s Hospital during a press conference on COVID-19 and MIS-C.
“We need to be careful about conquering COVID. We need to be careful about what our actions are doing to others,” Marilyn said.
“We are in a dire situation.”
Jason Lake, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Primary Children’s Hospital, said at a news conference that children usually have mild COVID-19 symptoms, but some develop “very severe infections.”
He said the Primary Children’s Hospital confirmed 17 MIS-C cases last week and has admitted several more patients since then. Doctors expect MIS-C cases to more than double in the coming weeks, especially as people get together for vacations.
“I really tell everyone that it is very important to find a safe and alternative way to interact with each other as we are in a dire situation in the coming weeks and months. I want to emphasize, “he said.

Erin Treemarcki, a pediatric rheumatologist at the Primary Children’s Hospital, said the most common MIS-C symptoms were fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and a rash.
Although MIS-C looks different from acute COVID-19 infections, she said, it can be very similar to other infections, autoimmune or inflammatory conditions, and even appendicitis.
However, Treemarcki said that MIS-C is characterized by fever with laboratories showing high levels of inflammation and diseases that affect various organs such as the liver, heart, and kidneys.
She revealed that the inflammatory condition is not new, but that MIS-C itself is a new diagnosis associated with COVID-19. MIS-C diagnostic criteria from both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization include either a positive COVID-19 test, COVID-19 antibody, or known exposure to COVID-19, she said. Said.

Treemarcki added that more than half of MIS-C children and young adults spend an average of 6 days in the hospital and 5 days in the ICU.
“It has a significant impact on the family,” said Treemarcki.
However, she added that most children and young adults with MIS-C responded well to treatments containing immunoglobulins and steroids.
Long-term impact unknown
Dongngan Truong, a pediatric cardiologist at Primary Children’s Hospital, said MIS-C can affect almost every organ system in the body, but one of the most commonly affected organs is the heart. Said.
According to currently published reports, about 50% of children with MIS-C experience very low blood pressure as a result of infection, and about 40% to 50% of children experience decreased cardiac function. She said she was. Up to 25% of children with MIS-C experience coronary artery hypertrophy.

Doctors also saw children with red eyes, a rash on the body, and leaks of valves in the fluid around the heart, Truong said.
“Fortunately, many children with MIS-C improved their heart function at discharge, but the long-term effects of MIS-C on the heart are unknown,” she said.
Little is known about the long-term effects of MIS-C on the heart, so children with reduced heart activity stop all competitive sports and other strenuous activities for 3-6 months and the heart heals. Truong says he can save time.
This time also allows doctors to be aware of long-term damage to the heart, such as scarring. This can lead to abnormal heart rhythms and, in rare cases, sudden death.
“Given the limited data that we have long-term consequences for (above) MIS-C and (that) heart, we are generally quite cautious,” Truong said. ..
